Morphological Features of Species
Filaments of Nostoc are typically surrounded by a gelatinous sheath and display a distinctly constricted appearance. The vegetative cells are mostly rounded, arranged in chains resembling a string of beads. Intercalary heterocytes occur at irregular intervals, while the colonies often form macroscopic, gelatinous clusters visible to the naked eye. Fragmentation of trichomes contributes to the propagation of the organism under environmental stress.
