Morphological Features of Species
Cells are unicellular, spherical to subspherical or ellipsoid, typically 2–10 µm in diameter, lacking flagella. Their chloroplast is usually cup-shaped (or saucer-shaped), containing a single pyrenoid surrounded by starch grains. Reproduction is asexual, most commonly via internal cell division (autosporulation/mitosis), with daughter cells formed within the parental cell wall.
