Morphological Features of Species
Nostoc filaments are enveloped within a prominent mucilaginous sheath, giving rise to compact colonies. Vegetative cells are generally spherical to slightly elongated and aligned in bead-like chains. Intercalary heterocytes are scattered at regular intervals, supporting nitrogen fixation. The filaments may fragment under stress, and the colonies often appear as gelatinous masses in natural environments.
