Morphological Features of Species

Cells are short, rod-shaped, measuring 0.7–1.2 μm in width and 2–10 μm in length. They are unicellular, ovoid to cylindrical in form, and reproduce by binary transverse fission in a single plane. The cell surface often shows a rugulose relief under negative staining. Unlike many filamentous cyanobacteria, they occur as solitary cells and lack a mucilaginous sheath.
