Morphological Features of Species
Nostoc forms long, unbranched filaments embedded within a thick mucilaginous sheath. The vegetative cells are rounded to slightly oval, linked in bead-like chains that give the trichome a characteristic appearance. Intercalary heterocytes occur intermittently and serve as specialized sites for nitrogen fixation. Colonies are commonly gelatinous and compact, often visible to the naked eye as green to dark masses in aquatic or moist terrestrial habitats.
