Morphological Features of Species
Coenobia are typically formed of a small number of cells arranged linearly, with outer cells often adorned with spines; however, spine presence can vary (short, asymmetric spines or sometimes absent). Cell surface ornamentation includes ridges, folds and, in some strains, reticulate or net-like ultrastructure. Cells are ovoid to cylindrical; cell size and colony shape show plasticity depending on environmental conditions. Reproduction is asexual, through autosporulation. Desmodesmus armatus is noted for relatively robust growth, ornamented coenobia, and ability to tolerate variable environmental stresses.
