Morphological Features of Species

Members of Scenedesmaceae are non-motile green algae forming characteristic coenobia, most often with 2, 4, 8, or more cells arranged in linear or slightly curved series. Cells are usually cylindrical, ovoid, or ellipsoid, ranging from 5–30 µm in size, and terminal cells may develop spines or bristles. Colonies are sometimes embedded in a thin mucilaginous matrix. Each cell typically possesses a parietal chloroplast with one pyrenoid, and reproduction is asexual by autosporulation.
