Morphological Features of Species

Scenedesmus forms non-motile coenobia, most commonly of 2, 4, 8, or 16 cells arranged in linear or slightly curved series. Cells are cylindrical, ovoid, or ellipsoid, usually 5–30 µm in size. Terminal cells may bear spines or bristles, which aid in buoyancy and defense. Each cell contains a single parietal chloroplast with a pyrenoid. Reproduction is asexual through autosporulation inside the parental cell wall.
