Morphological Features of Species
Members of Scenedesmaceae are green algae that typically form non-motile colonies of 2, 4, 8, or more cells arranged in linear or coenobial structures. Cells are cylindrical, ellipsoid, or ovoid, usually 5–30 µm in size, and may exhibit spines or bristles at the terminal ends. Colonies are embedded in a thin mucilaginous matrix, while chloroplasts are parietal and often contain a single pyrenoid. Reproduction is asexual, occurring through autosporulation within the parental cell wall.
