Morphological Features of Species
Nostoc forms long, unbranched filaments that are enclosed in a conspicuous mucilaginous sheath. Vegetative cells are rounded or slightly elongated, arranged in bead-like chains. Intercalary heterocytes are regularly distributed along the filaments, facilitating nitrogen fixation. Filaments often aggregate into macroscopic colonies, visible as gelatinous masses in natural habitats.
